Day 1  Hanoi

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum

OVERVIEW:

 

Arrive in Hanoi and transfer to your hotel. Enjoy a cyclo tour through the busy yet charming streets of the Old Quarter and attend a performace of water puppet show, a unique local art form, before enjoying a Vietnamese dinner.

Day 2  Hanoi

OVERVIEW:

Start your day with a walk down to Hoan Kiem Lake at dawn to see the local people practising tai chi. Enjoy a guided tour around the many attractions of Hanoi such as the Fine Arts Museum, the historic Temple of Literature and the museum of Hoa Lo Prison – a former jail that housed prisoners of war during the Vietnam War and was better known as the ‘Hanoi Hilton’.

 

Pay homage to Vietnam’s revolutionary leader, Ho Chi Minh, at his mausoleum. End your day with a short trip out of the city to the excellent Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, which showcases the 54 ethnic groups living in Vietnam.

Day 3  Halong Bay

OVERVIEW:

 

You depart Hanoi at 8am and trave east through the Red River Delta to Halong City, where you board your junk. Enjoy a welcome drink and a fresh seafood lunch while cruising in magnificent Bai Tu Long Bay and admiring the rock formations rising from the sea. A chance to enjoy swimming on Thien Canh Son Cave, then on to Hon Co Island for a chance to do some kayaking.

 

Stay overnight on your boat in Halong Bay in air-conditioned cabins.

Day 4  Hue

Vietnamese Junk Halong Bay Vietnam

OVERVIEW:

 

Morning cruise to Vu Vieng fishing village where you are taken on a traditional rowboat to meet the local people. Heading back to the harbour in your junk and disembark about midday. Transfer to Hanoi’s Noi Bai Airport and catch an early evening flight to Hue.

Day 5  Hue

Hue Citadel Vietnam

OVERVIEW:

Meet after breakfast for a full day tour. Start on the outskirts of town by visiting Nguyen Dynasty royal tombs of the emperors Minh Mang and Khai Dinh. Take a one hour boat trip on a wooden dragon boat along the Perfume River and visit the famous Thien Mu Pagoda.

 

In the afternoon, visit the ruins of the historic Imperial Citadel. Destroyed in parts in the 1968 Tet Offensive, this former royal palace complex is also known as the Purple Forbidden City.

Day 6-7  Hoi An

Hoi An Japanese covered bridge

OVERVIEW:

 

Drive over the scenic Hai Van Pass and along the spectacular coastline. On arrival in Hoi An, check into your hotel and take a trip back to a bygone era on a walking tour of the Ancient Town.  Visit the Japanese Covered Bridge as well as some of the Chinese clan houses or ancestral family homes and lovely hidden pagodas. In the evening, dine out on the famous cuisine of Hoi An in a local restaurant.

 

You have a free day in Hoi An to further explore this fascinating town at leisure.

Day 8  Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

Cu Chi Tunnels Bed Vietnam

OVERVIEW:

 

You are transferred to Danang Airport for your morning flight to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). On arrival you are transferred to your hotel. Visit the Cu Chi Tunnels and learn how the guerrilla fighters constructed an amazing underground base and village network during the French Resistance and the Vietnam War.

 

Stop at the private home of a war veteran of the Vietnamese-American War. You will have the opportunity to meet and chat with him and his family and enjoy a delicious home-cooked dinner before heading back to Ho Chi Minh City.

Day 9  Ho Chi Minh City

OVERVIEW:

 

Your city tour includes a visit to the  Reunification Palace, formerly the Presidential Palace, and the War Remnants Museum. The Vietnamese Traditional Medicine Museum gives another insight into Vietnamese culture. There are some great markets if you are in the mood to shop, alternative you can visit some of the other museums like the History Museum or places of worship such as the Thien Hau Lady Goddess Pagoda and Jade Emperor Pagoda.

Day 10  Chao Doc

OVERVIEW:

Travel to Chau Doc and catch a small boat to visit the Cham Village nearby. See the local fish farms and  learn more the villagers’ way of life. Drive to visit the peaceful temple of Lady Chua Xu and Tay An Pagoda.

 

Reach the top of Sam Mountain and be rewarded with beautiful views across to Cambodia, before returning to your hotel for an evening at leisure.

Day 11  Phnom Penh

Lan Anh Speedboat

OVERVIEW:

In the morning join the express boat for a six-hour journey up the Mekong River. Clear custom and immigration at a border post by the river, then travel past rural villages on your way to Phnom Penh. On arrival at the wharf in Phnom Penh you are met by your Cambodian guide and transferred to your hotel.

Day 12  Phnom Penh

OVERVIEW:

Afternoon tour of the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, then get introduced to Khmer art and sculptures at the National Museum and stop at Wat Phnom, a temple linked to the foundation of the city.

 

End the day with a sunset cruise on the Tonle Sap and Mekong Rivers.

Day 13 Phnomn Penh

Confront the tragedies of the Khmer Rouge era on a morning tour of the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek and the notorious Tuol Sleng Museum. Shop for souvenirs at the Russian Market and be entertained in an evening Khmer cultural dance show by Plae Pakaa Cambodian Living Arts.

Day 14  Siem Reap

Ta Phrom Temple Cambodia
OVERVIEW:

Drive overland to Siem Reap. Stop at Skuon, a town renowned for its local speciality! Stop at the rarely-visited Sambor Prei Kuk, one of the most important pre-Angkorian sites in Cambodia, and observe the art of craft-making in local villages. (Please note: for those who don’t wish to undertake the road trip, there is an option on this day to take the short flight from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap.)

Day 15-16  Siem Reap

Stone Statues Angkor Wat Cambodia
OVERVIEW:

Morning guided tour around the former royal city including Angkor Thom and the Bayon, where you are confronted with giant statues of smiling Buddha faces. Afternoon visit to the temple complex of Angkor Wat.

 

Dawn visit to Ta Prohm and Preah Khan, where jungle-covered ruins have been left the way they were when ‘rediscovered’ by the outside world – a testament to the power of nature. Journey north to  Banteay Srei, famous for its exquisite stone carvings. Meet resident monks in a local monastery.

Day 17 Siem Reap

Lake Tonle Sap Cambodia
OVERVIEW:

Morning tour of the Lake Tonle Sap area including the local water villages of Kompong Pluk and Chhong Kneas. Visit an artisan workshop to see local handicrafts being produced before being transferred to Siem Reap Airport for your flight home.
